Articles

Jminiatures models use the proven paper over foam board method of construction so you get a sturdy professional-looking model that is lightweight and easy-to-transport.

Construction is fairly straightforward and simple. Take your time and construction should go smoothly.

The following articles cover the basics of working with foam board and card.

Working With Foam board

Foam board is an inexpensive, lightweight, sturdy material made of a foam layer sandwiched between two layers of card. The most common styles of foam board are 5mm thick white foam board and 5mm thick black foam board. For years, architectural and engineering firms have used foam board for presentation models.

Working With Card

Card is a heavier paper stock that is easier to work with than foam board because it is easier to cut and can be cleanly folded.

Scoring Card

Scoring is partially cutting into rather than through card to make it thinner at the fold. This results in a clean fold.

You can score card easily with a dull hobby knife. A dull knife is less likely to cut entirely through the card than a sharp knife. Use a cutting mat or cardboard to protect your work surface from the tip of the knife blade.

Recommended Materials

Foamboard
Card backed styrofoam sheets available in variety of sizes and thicknesses. Jminiatures models use 5mm thickness unless otherwise specified.
Ruler
Tips:     A Steel ruler (cork backed to prevent slippage) is the best.
            Measure twice, cut once.
Modelling knife
Jminiatures uses the X-acto #2 Used with a ruler, gives you much straighter cuts than scissors.
Tip: Protect your worksurface with a cutting mat or cardboard.

Safety Tips:     Cut away from yourself
Use several light passes with for cleaner cuts and more blade control
Change blades frequently, sharper blades cut more cleanly and require less pressure

Foamboard Cutter
One of those things you don't need that are cool to have. JMiniatures uses the Logan Model 1500
Used with a straight edge, this holds a blade at 90 or 45 degree angle so you can make clean cuts.

Tip: Save blades, material and time by saving 45 degree off-cut foamboard to flip over and use later.

Jminiatures uses Elmer?s Craft Bond Photo Stik
?All purpose? clear or PVA adhesive

I deleted or lost my PDF, what do I do?
Send an E-mail to support@jminiatures.com

Can I send the PDF to someone else or post it online?

No, you may not distribute the PDF or its contents in whole or in part to others.

Can I use graphics in the PDF for anything other than constructing the model?
No, you may not use the graphics for any other purpose, nor create derivative works from the graphics.

How difficult is it to build the models?

Construction is fairly straightforward and simple. Take your time and construction should go smoothly.

How do I print out the model on my printer?
Rather than attempt to print out the model yourself, Jminiatures strongly recommends using a local copy shop (e.g., Kinko?s) or print service provider capable of printing your model in color at a resolution of 150 d.p.i. (dots per inch)  with no page scaling.

IMPORTANT Make sure that when you print out your model you print at 100%. You do not want ?Page Scaling?, ?Fit to Print Margins? or ?Fit to Page? printing  options because these will change the output size.

Any local copy shop (e.g., Kinko’s) or office supply store that offers printing (e.g., Staples) can handle the printing for you so you get great results and don’t have to worry.

Fortunately, putting the model together is straight-forward and simple.

Each model comes with clear assembly diagrams to keep things simple so you get great results right away regardless of your level of experience.

Compared to the cost of assembling and painting a plastic kit, using a Jminiatures kit is a great value.
